Council shortlisted for two regional awards (5 November 2007)

PR 3249

Two council services have been shortlisted for awards at the Making a Difference in Yorkshire and Humber 2007 awards.

The North Lincolnshire Highways Alliance Partnership and the FreshStart initiative have both been shortlisted for the annual awards.

The awards is organised by Local Government Yorkshire and Humber. Local Government Yorkshire and Humber is a regional partnership of local councils and fire and rescue authorities. It enables them to work together and collaborate on issues of common purpose. The awards are open to the 22 councils in the region as well as the four fire and rescue authorities.

FreshStart is a partnership project between the council, the Primary Care Trust, and Voluntary Action North Lincolnshire. It has been shortlisted in the Making The Connections award category.

FreshStart works to develop new services and activities for the over 50-year-olds in North Lincolnshire. These are provided around themes of health and care, information and signposting, socialising, and services in the home. By providing these services, FreshStart helps keep people aged fifty and above informed about a range of issues that are important to them. By putting people in touch with groups, events and activities taking place in their community, FreshStart helps people feel part of their community and helps break down isolation and loneliness.

The North Lincolnshire Highways Alliance Partnership has been shortlisted in the Working Together to Improve award category.

The council is developing better highway and transport services for local people through a new way of working. So council staff formed an alliance between the civil engineering and building contractor Clugston Construction, and highway and structure designers Pell Frischmann. Together they make up the North Lincolnshire Highways Alliance Partnership. The alliance means that all upcoming projects are carried out by the council and its partners, rather than putting contracts out to tender to different firms each time. Working together on projects has advantages in time, quality, cost, health and safety and the environment. Other bonuses are extra skills, training and continued employment for staff of the partners, jobs for North Lincolnshire people, and more supply opportunities for other local firms.

Cllr Mark Kirk, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council said:

“It’s great news to see two schemes that the council is heavily involved in gain this level of recognition. Being shortlisted for these two awards lets us know that these schemes really do make a difference to local people.

“FreshStart is making massive strides into improving the quality of life and awareness of services for people aged 50 and over in North Lincolnshire. And the Highways Alliance Partnership combines our own employees skills with those of our partners. Together the partnership is determined to work together to see less accidents on our roads and improved accessibility and availability of alternative transport. Both schemes are definitely worthy of awards and I wish them the best of luck on the awards evening.”

The Making a Difference in Yorkshire and Humber 2007 award ceremony will take place on 29 November at the Queens hotel in Leeds City Centre.
