Council hosts national meeting (29 November 2007)

PR 3286

North Lincolnshire Council for the first time is holding the National General Meeting of The Alliance. The Alliance is a group of councils from traditional industrial areas of England, Scotland and Wales, who work together with the aim to develop industrial areas into more prosperous places to live, work and visit. The council will find out how it can access funding to develop North Lincolnshire.

The meeting will be held at Normanby Hall on Friday 30 November at 9.45am.

The Alliance puts forward the case that in order for industrial areas to develop and catch up with cities such as London, areas including North Lincolnshire still need to have more to offer. This includes factors such as better jobs – especially better paying jobs – better health, better housing and more.

The councils formed the group with the following objectives:

  • To communicate the needs of Britain’s traditional industrial areas to a wide range of government, parliamentary and EU bodies
  • To attract resources to assist in the economic, social and environmental regeneration of these areas
  • To press for balanced growth within as well as between regions
  • To provide a framework for information-sharing and collaborative working between member authorities

As well as publicising the need for development and asking the government for help with regenerating areas, the councils also work together to apply for lottery and EU funding.

Cllr Mick Grant, Cabinet Member for Housing and Strategic Planning, said:

"I am really pleased the council has been given the opportunity to hold the general meeting. This helps to show how committed we are to achieving the aims of The Alliance and that we are serious about working together for the benefit of North Lincolnshire.

"The Alliance is made up of over 70 councils from all over the UK that are working hard to bridge the economic gap between industrial areas and better developed cities.

"The collection of councils are not simply asking the Government to hand out money to develop various regions, they are engaging with a range of organisations to help secure the resources that will have a real impact on the future of industrial areas such as Scunthorpe and North Lincolnshire.

"Our area has plenty to offer residents, businesses and tourists, the council wants to continue to improve an already thriving North Lincolnshire."
