Adult Learners’ Week 2008 (9 May 2008)

PR 3488

Saturday 17 May will see the launch of Adult Learners' Week in North Lincolnshire and the council’s Adult Education Service will be celebrating the week in style.

Adult Learners' Week is an annual week-long national campaign delivered each May with the aim of engaging and inspiring people to pursue adult learning. People are encouraged to either catch up on skills not learnt at school, to learn for or at work, or simply to learn something new for fun.

This year, the council will celebrate Adult Learners Week with ‘CultureFest’ – seven days packed full of activities and tasters designed to bring a culturally diverse community together through the power of learning.

CultureFest will celebrate the success of adult learners and their achievements, working to inspire others to have a go for themselves. This could be anything from learning a new skill, updating on existing skills, learning for fun with the family or even pursuing an interest or passion.

The week also marks the official opening of Venture, a new retail outlet at Barton’s adult education centre.

Venture will be open on Saturday 17 May, 10am to 3pm. It will showcase learners’ work. Pottery, paintings, handcrafted cards and much more will also be on sale in the shop.

Everyone is welcome to attend any of the activities. All you have to do is call one of the centres to reserve a place.

Cllr Pauline Carlile, Cabinet Member for Adult Services said:

"Adult Learners’ Week is all about celebrating and raising awareness of the fact that we all learn everyday often without realising it. And that taking the next step and going on a course needn’t be like going back to school.

"We’re also celebrating this year with the official opening of Venture at Barton Adult Education Centre. Venture will sell work produced by local learners in the Arts and Craft areas, so people will be able to see items such as paintings, hand made cards, pottery, bobbin lace and much more up for sale. Venture will showcase the work and achievements of adult learners – something that Adult Learners’ Week is all about. I’d like to encourage local people to get involved in this year’s Adult Learners’ Week – whether they want to gain new skills or qualifications to get a promotion at work, or want to learn more about a subject they’re interested in, adult learning could be the ideal solution."

Adult Learners' Week is completely free and welcomes everyone to join in the celebration. A programme of activities is now available (below) with details of what’s happening at each of the council’s adult education centres.

North Lincolnshire Council’s Adult Education Service provides daytime and evening courses for anyone aged 16 and above. The service provides an assortment of courses, from computer courses through to calligraphy. There are four main centres that serve the North Lincolnshire community. And these include three purpose built state of the art facilities at Ashby Link Adult Education and Multimedia Centre, Barton Adult Education Centre and Brumby Adult Community Learning Centre. There are also facilities in Brigg.
