PR 2419
Senior North Lincolnshire councillors and officers met secondary school heads yesterday (Tuesday 9 May) to discuss academies as part of the Building Schools for the Future programme.
Building Schools for the Future (BSF) is a once in a generation chance to invest in secondary schools. The Government is making £73.5m available to re-build or modernise schools in Scunthorpe.
Both the secondary heads, principals and the council welcome the opportunity for £73.5m of investment in secondary schools in Scunthorpe as part of the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme. This is a once in a generation chance to transform education in the area and everyone is committed to ensuring the potential of this investment is realised.
All recognise the key factor on any decision about the BSF project must be the needs of current and future pupils, but that the needs of staff and the wider school community must be considered.
Any decisions must be evidence based to ensure the bid has the best possible chance of success.
Both the council and secondary heads agreed that the evidence on academies does not support provision for post 16 students. This evidence will be submitted to the Government on post 16 education if a school moves forward with academy status.
It was also agreed to attempt to seek a meeting with the new Government Minister to clarify a number of issues around academies and their role within Building Schools for the Future. If a meeting were to be granted the council would be joined by a representative from the secondary heads' association.
