HRH The Princess Royal opens Melior Community College

HRH The Princess Royal officially opened Melior Community College on Thursday 19 January.

Her Royal Highness was given a tour of the college by Angela Briggs, Principal and spoke to staff and pupils before viewing the Heroes’ Wall.

The Heroes’ Wall was put in place to commemorate the memory of three former pupils who died serving their country. She met the family members of the deceased soldiers and representatives of the armed forces.

The idea of the wall came from a desire to raise £10,000 for the Help for Heroes charity through selling slate tiles with staff and pupils’ names on them – to date the college is half-way towards its target.

Her Royal Highness then unveiled a plaque in the atrium to formally open the school.

To see the photographs from the opening visit the BSF photo gallery.

Melior Community College is a brand new state-of-the-art £18m purpose built school that was funded through the Building Schools for the Future project. It replaces Thomas Sumpter and South Leys Schools that joined together four years ago.

The school has 939 places and is the only 100 per cent new school within the BSF programme in North Lincolnshire, and the first brand new secondary school for many years in the area.

Work started in November 2009 and outside work will be fully completed in Spring 2012.
