North Lincolnshire's position on the Humber Estuary has allowed the area to take full advantage of trading opportunities with other northern European countries. There are wharf facilities at ten locations along the River Humber and the River Trent. The docks at Grimsby and the docks and ferry port at Hull are both within easy reach.

The River Ancholme also flows through North Lincolnshire. The entrance to the river is at South Ferriby and it passes through the centre of Brigg. Several historic bridges cross the river, including a suspension bridge at Horkstow. Many private boats use the River Ancholme and the riverbanks are popular with walkers.
