- Decide on the venue for the wedding
- Provisionally book a date and time for your ceremony with the venue
- Contact the Superintendent Registrar of the district in which the venue is situated to make sure staff can attend to officiate at your wedding. The wedding will be pencilled in the diary awaiting confirmation
- You can then confirm the booking with the venue and pay any deposits necessary
- The next step is to telephone the Superintendent Registrar at the Register Office in the district in which you each live to make an appointment to give a “Notice of Marriage”.This is the legal preliminary to a civil marriage and you will both be interviewed and asked to bring with you documents to prove your nationality and marital status plus evidence of where you live.
A fee of £30 each is payable for the giving of a Notice. The law requires you to give this notice no earlier than one year before your wedding date and no later than 16 days before. It's important that you complete the preliminaries within the required dates in order for your marriage to legally take place.
There is a registration fee payable one month before the ceremony.
