Through Encore Music Services we are able to provide local music groups with access to one of the most comprehensive collections of printed music for hire in the country.
Over 2000 titles are available in the Vocal Score Collection. There are more than 800 titles in the Orchestral Collection.
Users of this service need to contact Encore Music Services direct to order their music.
What is Encore Music Services?
Encore has its origins in a number of small collections inherited by Humberside County Council in 1974. These were brought together in 1982 and given the title of the County Music Service. In 1996 as Humberside was abolished, the collection came under joint ownership of the four unitary authorities. It is now administered on their behalf by Kingston upon Hull City Council as Encore Music Services.
Staff
There are two members of staff that make up the Encore team - they are Catherine Sutherland and Naomi Smith.
Opening hours
Opening hours are currently:
- Monday to Friday (office hours)
Viewing of the Encore stock is by appointment only. Please telephone in advance to make an appointment. If you phone and no one answers, please leave a message and staff will get back to you.
How to place a request
Requests can be made by telephone, email, fax or post. When making a request, staff will inform you if the music you require is available. They can also tell you how many vocal scores are in stock. If the music you want is not in stock Encore staff will advise you on availability through the inter-library loan service, or of hire locations if the work is still in copyright.

What happens next?
Once you have confirmed all the necessary details (dates, number of vocal scores, edition) a hire contract (confirmation document) will be posted or faxed to you. This sets out the composer, title and format of the music you require. It also gives the date you need it by, your performance date and the date of return, and how much it is going to cost. You will be asked to sign one copy and return it to Encore. If you need music urgently then the confirmation document, scores and invoice will all be sent to you together.
Delivery and collection
Customers can choose to collect and return their loans via North Lincolnshire libraries. There may be a charge for this service. Customers may also choose to have items delivered directly to an address of their choice. This can be done using a courier service, for which a charge is made.
Staff at Encore can discuss delivery and collection options with you when you place your request. Should you find that your music loan is inaccurate or incomplete, please contact Encore as soon as possible.
Charges
Charges are as follows:
- Orchestral sets: £20 per set
- Vocal scores (over 20 pages): 75p per copy
- Song sheets: 30p per copy
Payment
The hire fee that you will be charged is determined by North Lincolnshire Council and administered on their behalf by Hull City Council. An invoice and pre-paid envelope will be sent with the music. This will give a 28-day payment period. A posted receipt will acknowledge all payments. A red invoice will be sent at 28 days and a final demand at 56 days. Encore reserves the right to cease to loan material if payment remains outstanding after 84 days.
Lost or damaged music
If a set is incomplete when you return it, Encore will notify the borrower as soon as possible of the missing material. An invoice will be sent, either within five working days if requested, or after a period of four months. Music that has been written on in ink is regarded as damaged and you will be charged for it. Relevant pencil marking, however, is acceptable.
Interlibrary loan
If the music you require cannot be supplied from the Encore collection then it is often borrowed from other libraries around the country. The Encore staff can talk to you about possible locations and prices when you first request the music. They will confirm the booking with you as soon as the correct material has been traced. Please do not telephone Wakefield Library. We do use their collection but it is expensive and we can often obtain the music cheaper from another source.
Catalogues
'Orchestral Music', and 'Vocal scores' are already available. If you have not got these and would like copies then please ring 01482 616852.
