Karen Maitland

Local author who appeared at the North Lincolnshire Readers' Festival in October 2008.

My all time favourite five reads are ...

  1. 'The Dark is Rising' Sequence - Susan Cooper (Children's book)
  2. Carnage on the Committee - Ruth Dudley Edwards (hilarious crime novel about a literary prize committee who are murdered one by one - is the murderer a disgruntled author?)
  3. Midnight's Children - Salman Rushdie
  4. The Listeners (the poem) by Walter de la Mare
  5. Plant Lore - Josephine Addison (a pot-pourri of history, folklore and practical advice)

My favourite word is ...

My favourite book from my childhood was ...

  • 'The Little Grey Men' by "BB" about Dodder, Baldmoney, Cloudberry and Sneezewort, the last gnomes left in Britain, who live by a stream under the roots of an oak tree.

The last thing I read before answering these questions was ...

  • The instructions on packets of radish and rocket seeds, which I was sowing in my newly constructed salad bed. I hope they come up!

My favourite place to read would be ...

  • On an ancient squigy sofa in front of a fire in a tiny cottage in Salthouse, Norfolk, over looking the saltmarshes, with my cat cuddled up next to me. Best time is when the rain lashes down, the wind howls and the waves crash over the storm-beach. I did this at Easter.

If I could only read one last thing in my life it would be ...

  • A letter from the Buckingham Palace congratulating me on reaching my 110th birthday.
