Training and development courses

The council's leisure services provides training for professional and voluntary sector workers.

The courses aim to help people improve their knowledge, skills and achieve their career aspirations. They are delivered by qualified and accredited professionals who are committed to delivering training in a relaxed and friendly environment:

  • Three-day first aid at work
  • Two-day first aid at work (re-validation)
  • One-day defibrillation course (AEDs)
  • One day appointed person emergency first aid in the workplace
  • One-day appointed person first aid in the workplace (paediatric)
  • Manual handling
  • RLSS national pool lifeguard
  • S.T.A Teachers certificate for swimming.
  • Safeguarding recruitment
  • Child protection course.

Training courses syllabus and dates

Three day first aid at work

This three-day course is a HSE approved course. It provides you with the most comprehensive training in first aid.

Course requirments

Candidates must be aged 16-years and over

Course syllabus

  • Legal obligations
  • Incident management
  • Cardio pulmonary resuscitation
  • Disorders of the airway
  • Wounds and bleeding
  • Bone, joint and muscle injuries
  • Poisoning

Course duration

A minimum of 18 hours contact time spread over at least three days.

One-day emergency first aid at work

Manual handling course

This course is structured to develop skills and knowledge to enable employers and employees to recognise, assess and reduce the risk relating to manual handling.

National pool lifeguard qualification

Successful candidates will receive a nationally recognised Pool Lifeguard qualification that will enable you to work within the leisure industry as a pool lifeguard.

Course requirements

Candidates must be at least 16 years old and a confident swimmer. Swimwear, t-shirt and shorts will be needed every week for the practical swim session.
