The Pods and Central Park

The council and Scunthorpe Town Team, with support from Yorkshire Forward, are creating a new Sports centre. The Pods and Central Park will provide a high quality sports facility for Scunthorpe. This will establish the town as a first class leisure destination.

A number of modern sporting and leisure facilities will be provided including:

  • A 25m swimming pool
  • Training pool
  • State of the art gym
  • Dance studio
  • Six court sports hall
  • Café and crèche.

As part of the project, Scunthorpe's Central Park will also be rejuvenated to the tune of £2m. This means the project as a whole will create a park centre for the renaissance of Scunthorpe, an icon of national quality, and a focal point for recreation, sport and leisure. The majority of this work will be completed by Summer 2010 and will comprise:

  • New £450,000 children's play area
  • Pavilion and street furniture constructed by special steel material called Coreten
  • Boulevard through the park (wonderful walkway that links up the entrance to the park and The Pods to the colleges)
  • Refurbished fountain
  • Events area with open air amphitheatre to hold low key music and theatrical events (built using excavated soil from The Pods).

This will ensure The Pods and Central Park will become a centre of excellence for sports and recreation and a hub for the development and delivery of sports education and leadership training. The unique design for the academy will see the creation of pods covered in natural materials. It is thought to be the first time in the country that this type of construction has been used for a major leisure facility.
