Site description
An extensive area of grassland and woodland, containing a variety of habitats. It includes: a meadow grazed by rabbits through rough grassland, developing scrub, birch and oak woodland. There are also newly planted Scots Pine and sycamore. The area has extensive public access and is linked to adjacent woodland and recreational areas. There is a wealth and variety of access throughout the site.
Management objectives
- To manage the site as a local nature reserve (LNR) for environmental education purposes; recreation of heathland in line with UK BAP targets and for the informal enjoyment of nature by the general public
- To maintain existing lowland heath
- To ensure that no more than 25 per cent of this lowland heath area is scrub or outlying trees
- To re-create and maintain four HA of lowland heath on areas of semi improved grassland
- To open out and manage areas of birch woodland
- To manage the secondary broadleaf woodland
- To maintain the blackthorn scrub within the existing area, with a diverse range of ages and height structure
- To provide and promote opportunities for education, access and community involvement
