Workshops usually run from 10am to 11.45am and 1pm to 2.45pm. Cross site visits can also be arranged - call us.

Workshops for autumn
With our award winning combination of the great outdoors and fantastic historical settings, our workshops allow your group to develop knowledge, understanding and key skills. Sessions include role-play, discussion and the chance to handle real and replica objects. We recommend a maximum of 32 children per session, please call us to discuss your needs.

Toys through Time (Foundation & Key Stage 1)
Meet our special teddy Oscar and explore toys from the museum's attic. Help sort through playthings old and new, finding out more about materials and how we value toys.
Move It (Key Stage 1)
From simple pushes and pulls to springs and motors, many moving toys use forces and mechanisms to delight us. Pupils will develop their understanding of forces and make a brightly coloured novelty to take back to school.
Both of these workshops include free entry to our Autumn exhibition 'It's a Plaything' - saving you up to £42 on your visit!
Art & Design
Our Secret Garden (Key Stage 1/Key Stage 2)
Enjoy the sights, sounds and fragrances of our Victorian Garden and produce a stunning fabric hanging for your school, using unusual methods and materials.
Develop artistic skills and teamwork with our newest workshop, created with a fabric artist. The whole day session will support creative and thinking skills, as well as QCA art and design units. It's a great way to develop your own fabric and observational drawing skills too! The quality hanging will bring years of pleasure to your school environment.
Held at Normanby Hall, this special session costs £145 per class, including all materials.

Toy Story (Foundation/KS1 - one hour)
Our popular play based session - enjoy toys from the 1950s/60s, Victorian and Tudor times before discussing preferences, similarities and differences.
Eyes to the Front (KS1/2)
Our popular schoolroom experience brought to you complete with blackboard, slates and blackboards.
Egyptian Life and Times (KS1 - outreach session - one hour and 45 minutes)
What can archaeological remains tell us about the past? Children will try some of the techniques that archaeologists use before selecting items for a tomb, creating a plush mummy and finding out more about the life and death of our Pharoah. No trowels required...just plenety of thinking skills!
A visit from Florence Nightingale (KS1 - one hour)
Meet Miss Nightingale, fresh from her work at Scutari Hospital and find out more about her life through role-play, questioning and exploring her travelling trunk.
Roman Life and Times (KS2 - one hour 45 minutes)
Pupils will stretch their numeracy skills by shopping for a Roman feast, delve into our archaeologist's finds trays and examining mystery objects. Find out more about Roman herbs by making a pomander, dress like a Roman and more during an engaging hands on session.
The Victorian Experience
History Detectives (KS2 - Farming Museum, Normanby Hall)
Use your investigative skills to discover more about the life of a local Victorian family by examining real source materials and the exhibits in the farming museum and park. An excellent workshop that develops source handling skills and brings local history to life.
Domestic Staff Required (KS1/KS2 - Normanby Hall)
Have you got what it takes to become a domestic servant? Meet Mrs Harding the housekeeper and find out more about life above and below the stairs during a tour of the hall. Domestic staff will relaunch in February/March 09 - please call us for more details.
Eyes to the Front! (KS1/KS2 - Normanby Hall)
Learn your three Rs and meet our strict schoolmistress in the 1897 schoolroom. Pay attention when reciting your peotry or you could end up wearing the dunce's cap.
Washday Blues (KS1 - Laundry, Normanby Hall)
Find out about keeping clean and clothing in the Victorian period with a hands on session in our award winning laundry experience. Use dolly tubs and plenty of elbow grease!
Step Inside (KS1 - North Lincolnshire Museum)
Mrs Kirby needs help to clean her cottage and prepare the supper. If you knock loudly enough on the door, she may invite you in to discover more about houses and homes over 100 years ago.
World War 2
Take Cover (KS1/KS2 - North Lincolnshire Museum)
Pack your evacuee's suitcase and learn about the people who protected the home front, before experiencing a raid in our Anderson Shelter and having a peek into the 1940s sitting room in our peoples' War Gallery.
Toys
Childhood Memories (KS1 - Baysgarth House Museum)
Find out about toys in the past, visit the Victorian Nursery and play outdoor games in the street.

Loans for schools
Our loans service for schools will be relaunched with brand new boxes in September. We are currently opertaing a reduced loans service as improvements are made to the selection of objects, interpretation and packaging. Call us for further details.
Other services for schools
Free twilight pre-visits
We ask that pre-visits are booked at least three weeks in advance of your trip. Meet with a member of the education team over tea and biscuits, to complete your risk assessment and find out more about your chosen workshop.

We want your visit to be a happy and safe one. Free briefing sheets to help you prepare your risk assessment are available on request.
