Sheffield
Park can be found on the northern side of Scunthorpe and is approximately 4.2
hectares of land. It was provided from the
Sheffield family in 1926.
When
it originally opened in 1926, the park boasted one flat bowling green and one
crown bowling green with an adjacent pavilion. It also had a boating lake, an
aviary, a playing area and tennis courts. Its opening was such a big occasion
in Crosby that over 6,000 people flocked to the new park to witness the official
opening ceremony.
Sadly
over more recent years the park suffered abuse. It became a run-down area that
suffered years of neglect, attracted vandals and drug users and put people off
using it. But with help from the police, Surestart, environmental groups
and the local community, it has been totally transformed into a thriving public
space for all to enjoy once more.
The
Sheffield Park transformation
Sheffield
Park has now been awarded a Green Flag award for the last three years.
And the transformation it has undergone to change it into the park it is today
has been huge.
The
pavilion remains but has undergone major refurbishment and is now used for play
events for the under-fives and as a meeting place for special events and Friends
of Sheffield Park.
In
the place of the old run-down tennis courts is a multi-games area. The park
also now boasts:
- a new children's play area
- a tots' playing area
- skateboard park
- footpaths
- sensory garden
- picnic site
- BMX track
- recycling banks
- a wildlife area.
There's
also attractive flowerbeds, a woodland area, herbaceous borders and ample car
parking. The park is fully accessible for people with disabilities.
The park now provides a safer environment for all age groups to enjoy the new
facilities - particularly with the local community police station situated on
part of the old site. There's also a strong community involvement in the park
from all ages and ethnic origins. Sure Start and Crosby residential groups all
play major active roles in all issues relating to the park.
