Kingsway Gardens can be found on the western entrance to Scunthorpe. It's one
of Scunthorpe's larger parks and is around four hectares in size.
Scunthorpe
Borough Council developed it in the early 1950s to provide an attractive entrance
to Scunthorpe. But sadly over the years it became run-down and in need of reinvigorating.
Working
together with the local community, the council brought it back to life. This
culminated in the park winning a Green Flag for the last three years. It
now has dog-walking areas; children's play area, beautiful formal gardens
with carpet and shrub beds, a tree bank and park furniture. The site benefits
from all year-round access.
The
park provides a safe environment for all age groups to enjoy. And there's
also a strong community appreciation for the park. Here's a few of its main
features:
Children's
play area:
The
playground has modern swings, see-saw, springers, roundabouts, slides and a
climbing frame - all with rubber matting.
Flowerbeds:
Annual
bedding is very popular in the park and has been re-introduced, returning the
formal gardens back to their formal glory. Fifteen formal flower beds have been
designed and developed on the elevated site. The bedding schemes are changed
for both summer and spring floral displays.
Hedges:
The
park's hedgerows are predominantly privet and hawthorn. These provide
a natural ideal habitat for various forms of wildlife. And they're protected
from damage by security fencing.
Trees
and tree bank:
The
mature trees in the park are old and interesting varieties. The tree bank is
on the southern edge of the park, adjacent to the main A18 road. This also consists
of varied mature species of trees and provides a sound barrier to traffic noise.
Bat
boxes have been installed in some of the trees to help encourage wildlife habitats.
And various other common birds live in the tree bank, along with squirrels.
Footpaths:
The
park has around 4,193 linear metres of paths. These wide footpaths allow cyclists
to travel through the park.
Other:
Benches
are situated throughout the park and are of traditional cast concrete and wooden
slats.
Bins
are also provided in ample quantities. All of the bins are emptied on a daily
basis, along with dog waste bins.
Finally
the park also has toilet facilities too, located near the children's playground.
