Two parks in Scunthorpe have achieved a Green Flag award from the Civic Trust. This puts them among the best parks in the country. The "green flag" is the equivalent to the "blue flags" for clean beaches.
Kingsway Gardens and Sheffield Park, both in Scunthorpe, have retained their coveted Green Flag status for two years running. The Civic Trust manages the Green Flag Awards. They are designed to recognise parks that are high quality, provide a vital role as places of calm, beauty, and are areas where people come together to relax, exercise and play.
Any green space that is freely available to the public is able to apply. Awards are given annually and winners must apply each year to renew their Green Flag status.
Achieving the Green Flag award is a requirement of the Local Government Association's National Reputation Campaign that North Lincolnshire Council signed up to in December 2005. The council has met all 12 targets under the Reputation Campaign.
Despite only needing one park with "Green Flag" status, the council set its sights high and got not one but two awards.
