Would you like to make a difference for children and young people?
Children and Young People’s Services is looking to expand their volunteer driver’s service.
So what is the Volunteer Drivers Service?
Children and young people’s services operates a list of Volunteer drivers who use their own vehicles to transport children and young people to and from their destinations. Journeys can be for any reason but can include; visits to family, health appointments, education appointments, activities, doctors etc.
How much time can volunteers give?
Volunteers can give as little or as much of their time as they wish, it really is up to them. There are many journey requirements, some can be one-off journeys and some can be regular journeys. Most journeys are during the day anytime from 8am – 6pm but there are also requirements outside of these hours. Some volunteers prefer one-off journeys and others prefer regular runs at the same time and place each week, making it easier for them to arrange around their personal time-scales. Even if a volunteer can only commit to a few hours each month, their service is still appreciated.
What type of person can volunteer?
We have all sorts of people interested in volunteering, both men and women, retired people who would like to do a little extra work on the side, or working people who feel that they would like to volunteer in a way that suits their time-scales. We welcome anybody who shares our commitment to ensure children travel safely and comfortably.
Are all the journeys within North Lincolnshire?
Most journeys are within North Lincolnshire, however there are some long-distance journeys to destinations around the country. Either way, the role suits anybody who enjoys being out and about.
Do the volunteers get their mileage paid for?
You will be reimbursed on a monthly basis for your mileage and any other expenses incurred including things like parking. Volunteers are asked to complete a simple mileage form every month and then submit it for processing.
Will I have to undergo any checks or application process?
Yes. This is the most important part; all prospective volunteer drivers will need to go through a simple application process. You will also need to complete a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure so we can check that you are suitable to work with children. We will also need to see your driving license, insurance policy and MOT certificate. You will be invited to have a brief discussion about the role and have opportunity to ask any questions. Once everything has been approved, you are free to start volunteer driving as soon as you wish.
So what difference does it make?
It makes an incredible difference. Many volunteers agree that over time they get to know the children and young people they are transporting, it makes a difference in their lives by ensuring they can get to their appointments in a friendly, comfortable and most importantly safe manner. It is a very rewarding and fulfilling way of volunteering and better still you can choose when and where you volunteer.
