Completing a job application form

All the information we ask for on our job application form is important. You should always aim to complete as much of the form as you can. Follow this quick page by page guide to ensure that you don't miss anything out.

Page 1

Post title/number – you must always fill in this section. The council advertises many posts. If you leave this section blank your application may not reach the correct department in time.

Page 2

Teaching/Social work registration – if you are applying for a teaching or qualified social worker post you must provide your registration number.

Summary of main duties – your summary should be brief. You can provide more detail in the ‘Experience, skills & abilities’ section. Check the employee specification and emphasise any of your current duties that link to the job you are applying for.

Previous employment – you should mention everything that you have done here and be as accurate as possible. This could include time spent out of work, caring for your family and unpaid voluntary work. If you are not sure of the exact dates then you can estimate the month of starting.

Page 3

Education/training/qualifications/certificates – you should list secondary schools, colleges, universities, adult education and any other training. If the post you have applied for requires a specific qualification you will be asked to produce documentary evidence.

Experience, skills and abilities – this section gives you the opportunity to sell yourself. To be shortlisted you must meet the essential criteria being measured from the application form. If you meet any of the desirable criteria you should also mention them in your application. If the shortlisting panel have too many applicants they will use desirable criteria to eliminate applicants. Study the employee specification carefully. Think about your past experiences and link them to the essential and desirable criteria listed. State which criteria you feel you meet and give examples of work you have done that you feel demonstrates your competence. Remember that this could include training, voluntary or project work, and caring for your family. Our sample employee specification may help you with this:

References – we will always need a reference from your present or most recent employer. To speed up the recruitment process we often take up references before interview. If you do not want us to contact your current employer to be contacted at this point you must make this clear by ticking the appropriate box.

Additional information – if you have a disability you should let us know by completing this section. If you meet the essential criteria outlined in the employee specification, you will be invited to interview. It is also important that you let us know about any assistance you need.

Page 7

Convictions/disqualifications – you should declare all past warnings or convictions in this section. If the post you are applying for involves contact with children and/or vulnerable adults you will be subject to a check via the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB). If a criminal record check is carried out, we will find out your police record. If you have failed to declare this information it may be viewed negatively. The employee specification will outline whether a position is subject to a CRB check. For more information go to our Recruitment of ex offenders and CRB Disclosure procedure.

Declaration

You should always sign and date your form. This tells us that the information you have provided is accurate and truthful.

Monitoring of recruitment form

This form is extremely important to us. North Lincolnshire Council is working hard to ensure that its workforce reflects the make up of the communities it serves. Completing this form helps us to monitor how effective we are. On receipt, the monitoring form is immediately separated from the application form. The shortlisting and interview panel will not have sight of it and it plays no part in the selection process.
