If your home is unfit to live in and you cannot afford to pay for repairs, you may apply for a renovation grant from the council.
What work can a renovation grant cover?
Renovation grants can be obtained to carry out works to:
- Remedy instability
- Remedy serious disrepair
- Remedy severe dampness
- Provide heating, lighting or ventilation
- Provide adequate water supplies
- Provide cooking and food preparation facilities
- Provide a suitable toilet, bath or shower and wash basin
- Provide adequate drainage.
Who can apply?
Owner-occupiers
Applicants must b aged 18 years or over. The dwelling must be their only or main residence.
The grants are means tested. This will calculate the amount of money you will have to pay towards the costs of the works required.This also applies to joint property owners.
The maximum assistance available is £30,000.This amount can be increased with prior approval.
The grant will normally have to be repaid if the property is sold within five years of completion of the works.
