Disabled facilities grants (DFG) are available for a range of work that will help a disabled person live independently in their own homes.
Who can apply for a DFG?
- A tenant or owner of a property
- The person who applies for the grant does not have to be the disabled person who needs the adaptations.
- Disabled facilities grants are subject to a means test unless the disabled person is a child.
Whoever applies for the grant must produce proof of ownership or tenancy.
What type of work does a DFG cover?
Disabled facilities grants are awarded for essential adaptations to give a disabled person independence in their own homes. This work includes:
- Widening doors
- Improving access (ramps)
- Installing a stair lift to access rooms easier
- Adaptations to bathing facilities
- Adapting heating or lighting controls so that they are easier to use by a disabled person.
If the cost of the work is greater than the grant limit, you may be able to access a Houseproud loan.
Does the council have to give me a DFG?
If the council is satisfied that the work is:
- Necessary
- Appropriate
- Reasonable
- Practicable
- Feasible.
Then a disabled facilities grant will be awarded. In most instances home visits will be carried out to establish what is necessary and appropriate to meet your needs and what is reasonable and practicable.
The council reserves the right to refuse a grant.
How is a DFG calculated?
The government requires that disabled facilities grants are means tested to ensure that those in the most need get the most help.
This will be determined by assessing the income and savings of:
- The disabled person
- The disabled person's spouse or partner
- Against a set of allowances laid down by government.
Is the grant repayable?
If you receive a grant for more than £5,000 then you may have to repay the grant (up to a maximum of £10,000) if you move home within five years.
