Debt and rent arrears

If you have debt or rent arrears then the most important thing is not to panic, and don't be embarrassed about asking for help. There are lots of people who can help you if you are struggling with managing your money and paying your bills.

If you are on a low income or on benefits you will probably be able to get housing benefit (Local Housing Allowance) towards your rent but the amount you get will depend on the size of the property you need. You may also be able to get council tax benefit..

The Local Links can help if you are having problems with your housing benefit and council tax benefit and can also help you to claim them.

Are you a low income or do you have less money coming in than you used to?

You may be able to claim tax credits or benefits fromthe Jobcentre.

  • Advice agencies
  • Benefits Enquiry Line - Tel. 0800 88 22 00

The above will be able to advise you about this and they are usually free.

Are you getting in real problems with bills and debts? If so you should speak to a qualified debt adviser as soon as possible.
