Health promotion

The council plays an important role in working with partner organisations to promote health and well being in local communities.

It carries out much of this work through the development of activities. These are directed principally at disadvantaged areas, where health inequalities are at their greatest.

Specific projects and initiatives include the following:

Crosby Bridge Healthy Living Project

Crosby is one of the most deprived areas in North Lincolnshire. Specific projects address issues such as food and health, young people, mental health, welfare rights, community safety and physical activity.

For further information please ring the Pop-in Place on 01724 846611.

Barton and District Healthy Living Project

The Barton and District Healthy Living Project aims to improve the health and wellbeing of people in Barton and the eastern parishes, and reduce health inequalities. Projects include: community/youth cafés, home safety, positive mental health, Citizens Advice Bureau, transport initiatives and domestic violence awareness.

For more information, contact them on 01652 636913.

Fit For Football Healthy Living Project

Promoting wellbeing for young people is the aim of this out of school hours activity programme by raising the awareness of the health benefits of not smoking, healthier eating and physical activity.

120 schools in the most deprived wards of the Humber area have been nominated to take part in this four-year project with the hope of reaching up to 20,000 children.

Fit For Football is free for all participating schools.

For more information, visit the Fit for Football website or telephone the coordinator on 01724 297273.

Walking the Way to Health

The Walking the Way to Health Initiative in North Lincolnshire was established in August 2003.

Led walks are regularly being held around North Lincolnshire and are very popular. There are usually between 30 and 60 people attending the walks. None of the walks are over three miles. There are also a number of walking routes available for independent walkers.

For further information, contact the Health Walks Coordinator on 01724 297342.

HeartWell

HeartWell is a multi-agency project, working in partnership between health organisations, North Lincolnshire Council, local businesses, and voluntary and community groups.

HeartWell works to:

  • Support initiatives, which address risk factors for heart disease.
  • Encourage community groups or individuals proposing activities, which address lifestyle changes that help prevent ill health and enhance wellbeing.
  • Provide opportunities for individuals and groups to help develop self-esteem.
  • Raise awareness within the local community of the links between health, wellbeing and everyday activities
  • Encourage and support individuals and groups in making healthier choices.

For further information, contact the HeartWell Programme Manager on 01652 600100.

Home Safety

North Lincolnshire Council's Home Safety section together with local partner organisations is very active in pursuing a range of initiatives to minimise accidents in the home in North Lincolnshire. This includes:

  • Supplying and fitting free of charge to vulnerable households medicine cabinets, handrails, grab rails and cupboard safety catches and window restrictors.
  • Providing half-day interactive workshops at Crucial Crew.
  • Using large display screens of hazards in the home with children aged 7-11 in many of the primary schools in the area.
  • The provision of safety gates and fireguards at a subsidised cost to parents of young children through referral from health visitors.
  • The Home Safety section can also assist new and existing groups to provide home safety schemes, aiming to improve accident prevention.

For information or advice about any Home Safety issues, contact the Home Safety Officer on 01724 297323.
