Trading standards

North Lincolnshire Council's Trading Standards provides services in the following areas:

Fair trading

• False and misleading descriptions about goods and services.
• False and misleading descriptions about houses and properties.
• Preventing the supply of unroadworthy vehicles.
• Through partnership work, raising levels of satisfaction with motor traders - Motor Trade Partnership.
• Home Services Directory - a list of vetted tradespeople who can do work in your home.
• Pricing of goods and misleading prices and offers.
• Consumer credit.
• Protecting consumers and industry from counterfeit products.
• Assisting consumers in resolving their problems.
• Unwanted doorstep callers/traders

Safety

• Ensuring all consumer goods are safe.
• Ensuring second hand goods are safe.
• Regulating packaging on goods.
• Promoting re-use or recycling of packaging.
• Sampling and testing of goods.
• Preventing underage sales.
• Overloaded goods vehicles.
• Guidance to manufacturers and retailers.
• Electrical Safety Test Unit (Internal). We offer free annual electric blanket checks.
• Ensure the safe storage of petroleum spirit.
• Inspect premises storing explosives and test as appropriate.
• Inspect premises storing poisons.

Food and animal health

• Food standards inspections.
• Advice to traders on food labelling requirements.
• Sampling of foods to ensure compliance with compositional standards.
• Monitor use by dates on food.
• Carry out food surveys for national and regional clients.
• Visit retailers and manufacturers to ensure they comply with food legislation.
• Health and welfare of farm animals.
• Prevention of animal diseases.
• Rabies prevention.
• Advice and analysing of animal feeds and agricultural fertilisers.

Metrology (weights and measures)

• Inspect and test weighing and measuring equipment used in business.
• Inspect and test output from local manufactures.
• Advise businesses on all aspects of weights and measures laws.
• In collaboration with the Humber Authorities Calibration Service, provide and maintain local standards of weights and measures.
• Retail and wholesale food inspections.
