Age restrictions cover a range of goods.
These include:
- alcohol
- cigarettes
- fireworks
- butane lighter refills
- videos and DVDs
- knives
- lottery tickets
- solvents.
Abuse of some of these products can cause immediate death, for example butane lighter refills. Others can cause long term harm or addictions and also can lead to anti-social behaviour problems.
Trading Standards investigates all complaints relating to underage sales. Action taken can include advice and guidance, written warning and prosecution.
We work with our partners in the North Lincolnshire Safer Neighbourhoods Partnership to collate information and address problems in local hotspot areas.
To help retailers who sell age restricted products, we have produced an ‘underage sales information pack’. The pack details all areas of the law relating to underage sales that may affect you. Some of the sections may not be relevant to you as you may not sell the products involved.
We would suggest that you and your staff regularly read the pack to remind you of the rules governing age restricted sales. You should then sign in the relevant box to acknowledge that you understand what you have read.
It may not always be easy to refuse to sell products to people you suspect may be underage. But we hope that the information in the pack may help you to do this.
The underage sales information pack is available to download:
Due to the size of the document we have split it into two parts. Alternatively, contact us and we will send you a pack through the post.
We also have guidance notes for restaurants and cafes available for download.
