Import and export of livestock

All transporters carrying animals within, from or to Great Britain must be authorised.

"Specific authorisations" are required by those:

Short journeys

Transporting farm animals (cattle, sheep, pigs, goats) and horses on journeys over 65km and up to eight hours in road vehicles.

Long journeys

Undertaking journeys by sea, rail or air over eight hours.

Transporters should prepare written contingency plans and a journey log which must be forwarded to the 'competent authority' ( DEFRA) for approval prior to any long journey taking place.

All drivers and attendants, transporting farmed animals over 65km or 8 hours require a certificate of competance . These are only issued to the individual if they have received training and undergone an independent assessment.
