The council’s Trading Standards section enforces a wide variety of legislation. This legislation gives the council powers to do a number of things. It can:
- Issue verbal advice.
- Send letters.
- Serve formal notices.
- Issue formal cautions.
- Prosecute in the courts.
The council frequently finds breaches of the law. It has to choose the most appropriate way to ensure that the law is complied with. It has a range of possible actions available to do this.
The council carries out its enforcement functions efficiently and effectively and in a way that is open, clear and helpful to businesses and members of the public.
The enforcement action chosen by a council officer must be in line with the enforcement policy. The policy promotes consistency, proportionality, transparency and fairness.
