Waste Strategy - options for dealing with waste

We need to reduce our reliance on landfill for three main reasons:

  • to be more environmentally responsible
  • to meet the demands of new legislation
  • to reduce costs

Our waste strategy looks at how we can manage our waste in a sustainable way for the next 20 years and beyond. With this in mind, we will aim to manage North Lincolnshire’s waste locally. Some processing of recyclable material may have to be undertaken elsewhere. All of it will be dealt with in the UK or Europe.

So, what are the best – and worst – ways of dealing with the waste we produce? The diagram below, called the ‘Waste Management Hierarchy’ shows the best and worst options we can use. At the top is the preferred way which is to reduce the amount of waste we produce in the first place to the worst case scenario – which is to send all waste to landfill sites.
