Asbestos disposal

Where can I take it?

Householders wanting to dispose of bonded asbestos, such as drainpipes and guttering from their property, can take it to the household recycling centre on Cottage Beck Road, Scunthorpe free of charge.

No other household recycling centres can accept asbestos.

What time is the asbestos facility open?

The Cottage Beck Road household recycling centre is open seven days a week, but the times that you can dispose of bonded asbestos are restricted.

From 1 March to 31 October - 10am to 4pm

1 November to 28/29 February - 10am to 2pm

For more details on opening times and locations please visit our household recycling centre pages.

Asbestos disposal rules

Asbestos is potentially dangerous and needs to be handled with care. From 18 August 2008 new rules on the disposal of asbestos will come into force.

The new rules have been designed to safeguard the health and safety of SITA employees who operate the household recycling centres on behalf of the council, and other site users.

More detailed information is available on the different types of asbestos, where you may find it in your property, and the associated health risks of asbestos.

What do I need to do?

  • Plan ahead!
  • Prior to disposing of your asbestos, you will need to obtain disposal bags (a red bag and a clear bag) in advance, free of charge, from any of the eight household recycling centres. SITA staff will ask you for relevant details to keep our records up to date
  • Asbestos should be double bagged - first in a red bag, then a clear bag before you come to the household recycling centre
  • We will not accept loose asbestos that is not bagged, or unwrapped sheets of asbestos
  • Bagged asbestos should be of a manageable size
  • Full sheets of asbestos will only be accepted if wrapped in 'visquene', a type of sheeting available from a builders merchant
  • Visquene is not available from the household recycling centres

I cannot remove the asbestos myself, what can I do?

Details of registered asbestos disposal companies are available on the internet or in the Yellow Pages. Remember to make sure the company is registered to dispose of asbestos to avoid any asbestos being disposed of illegally. Asbestos (both trade and domestic) can also be taken to private disposal sites, for which there will be a charge.
