New asbestos disposal rules - 18 August 2008

Asbestos is potentially dangerous, and needs to be handled with care. From 18 August 2008 new rules for the disposal of asbestos will come into force.

The new rules will help to safeguard SITA employees, who operate the household recycling centres on behalf of the council and other site users from the associated risks of asbestos.

From 18 August 2008, householders wishing to dispose of bonded asbestos, such as drainpipes and guttering must adhere to the following rules:

  • Asbestos can only be taken to the household recycling centre on Cottage Beck Road, Scunthorpe
  • Check opening times as disposal times for asbestos are limited
  • You must obtain special disposal bags, free of charge, in advance from any of the eight household recycling centres
  • Provide relevant details to site attendants to keep our records up to date
  • All bonded asbestos must be double bagged (in the red bag, then the clear bag, as provided)
  • Taped down before coming onto site to reduce dust from the asbestos
  • Full sheets of asbestos will only be accepted if wrapped in 'visqune', a type of sheeting from builders merchants
  • We will not accept loose or unwrapped sheets of asbestos

Should you require any further information please visit the council's asbestos disposal pages or contact the Customer Helpline on 01724 297000.

Events in 2008

Visitors to a whole host of events across North Lincolnshire will be able to get plenty of tips on home composting and recycling this year.

Throughout 2008 the council's Waste Management team will be attending a number of festivals, fairs and shows this year, including:

  • Sunday 10 August, Eco Fair, Waters Edge
  • Sunday 21 September, Festival of the Plough, Low Burnham, Epworth
  • Sunday 26 October, Pumpkin Day, Normanby Hall

Recycling is something many of us do, but we can all do a little bit more. For example, while householders are actively recycling items such as glass, plastic, cardboard and garden waste, many still throw small electrical items - such as irons and hairdryers - into their general waste bin. But these can all be recycled at the local Household Recycling Centres reducing the amount sent to landfill.

Box and Bin Changes

The council has recently introduced a wide range of improvements to encourage more people to recycle, including:

  • Free new blue and green boxes, brown and burgundy bins, and a 140 litre general waste bin for all new homes and for people moving home.
  • Free first replacement of all 140 litre wheeled bins and boxes for those lost or stolen.
  • All residents can downsize their 240 litre bins to a 140 litre bin - free of charge.
  • One free larger 240 litre recycling bin (in burgundy or brown) for residents who choose to downsize their general waste bins.
  • To replace a 240 litre general waste bin residents will be charged £30.
  • Families of five or more permanent residents, who actively recycle, may qualify for larger 360 litre general waste bins.
  • A larger 360-litre bin for general waste is loaned to homes that contain one or more incontinence sufferers.

Recycling your waste will help plant fruit trees in Malawi

North Lincolnshire Council has signed up to a scheme which promises to grow a fruit tree in Malawi for every tonne of aluminium drink cans and foil recycled over the next two years, so the more we recycle, the more trees will be grown. Recycling aluminium is 20 times more efficient than making it from the raw material, bauxite, so getting into the recycling habit saves massive amounts of energy. And it will help achieve the target of growing 85,000 trees in the rural Malawi.

The initiative is being run by a 'not for profit organisation' Alupro in partnership with the British charity 'Ripple Africa'. The aim is to tackle deforestation, improve nutrition and as crop volumes improve, establish new businesses for fruit drying and juicing.

All North Lincolnshire residents have to do to support the campaign, is make sure they recycle every aluminium drinks can and clean foil container they can get their hands on. Aluminium cans and clean aluminium foil can be recycled through the green box scheme or through the network of recycling banks located throughout North Lincolnshire.

The great thing to remember is the more aluminium cans and foil you recycle - the more fruit trees will be grown!

Should you require further information about the green box scheme or your nearest recycling bank please visit the councils recycling pages or contact the Customer Helpline on 01724 297000.
