Recycling electricals

From 1 July 2007 you will be able to recycle your unwanted electrical items at each of the eight Household Recycling Centres as part of the new WEEE Directive.

What is WEEE?

WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment.

What is the WEEE Directive?

The directive requires that as of 1 July 2007 in the UK, producers of WEEE make arrangements to reuse or recycle our unwanted electrical items.  This will be achieved locally through the network of eight Household Recycling Centres in North Lincolnshire, where storage containers have now been provided. Producers are then arranging for the collection and recycling of your old electronic goods. For details of where you can recycle please see our Household Recycling Centres page.

Are there different types of WEEE?

There are five different categories of WEEE that we are now required to sort. These are classified as follows:

  • Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT) – items containing CRT such as televisions and PC monitors
  • Fluorescent tubes
  • Cooling devices – fridges and freezers
  • White goods – washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers and cookers
  • Small WEEE – small electrical appliances such as toasters, kettles, hairdryers, lawnmowers and battery operated appliances

*Please note batteries can be left inside the appliance. You can recycle batteries with electrical items at any of the Household Recycling Centres in North Lincolnshire.

How will it affect me as a householder?

Residents are now able to recycle their unwanted electrical items and batteries at designated collection points throughout North Lincolnshire.  Each of the eight Household Recycling Centres will have containers to receive the different types of WEEE. If you are unsure of where to put your WEEE please ask a site attendant for assistance.

You can still have your large white electrical goods picked up from your home by the council’s bulky collection service. These items will then be recycled. Please see the bulky collection service for more details.

How will it affect my business?

If your business is a distributor or a producer of electrical or electronic equipment the WEEE Directive may have implications for your business.  To find out more about your businesses obligations please visit the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) website.

Will retailers take my unwanted electrical items?

Some major retailers have chosen not to support the council’s collection schemes. These retailers are obliged to offer an in-store take back scheme instead. Under these circumstances when you buy your new electrical item you can take back the old item that you are replacing. Where in store take back services exist the council would encourage residents to use this service.

Every year, the amount of household waste being created is increasing. A solution to this problem will only be achieved with the help and co-operation of you all as residents of North Lincolnshire.
