The facts

Every year millions of aluminium and steel drink cans, food and pet food tins are purchased in supermarkets across the UK. If all of the aluminium drink cans sold in the UK were recycled, there would be 14 million fewer full dustbins per year. Every steel can purchased is 100 per cent recyclable. It can be recycled over and over again and is the easiest packaging in the world to recycle.

  • Recycling aluminium drink cans saves up to 95 per cent of the energy needed to make aluminium from its raw materials
  • If all of the aluminium cans recycled in the UK in 1998 were laid end to end, they would stretch from Land's End to John O'Groats more than 160 times
  • Producing steel from recycled material saves 75 per cent of the energy needed for steel to be made from virgin material
  • If all of the steel cans recycled in the UK each year were laid end to end, they would stretch three quarters of the way around the earth.

How you can help

  • Aluminium and steel drink cans, food and pet food tins and clean aluminium foil including foil food trays can be put into your green kerbside box for recycling. Please see the green box page for more details
  • Alternatively you can deposit your aluminium and steel drink cans, food and pet food tins and clean aluminium foil and foil food trays in your nearest can recycling bank. To find your nearest can recycling point please use the search function on the following page: where can I recycle?
  • You can also put your metal lids from your glass jars into the green kerbside box or can banks for recycling
  • Please rinse your tins and cans (avoid wasting water - use your washing up water or put them in your dishwasher with your others washing-up).

Things to avoid

  • Crisp packets, tablet packets, film backed foil should not be put into your kerbside box or the can banks
  • Reduce pollution and save energy; don't make a special car journey to go to the can bank. Combine it with another trip for example to the supermarket.
