Reducing waste water and Industrial effluent discharges for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Humber Region
The Project is run by North Lincolnshire Council and is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). It is also supplemented with monetary, and in kind contributions from North Lincolnshire Council and other public and private sector bodies, including Hull University and Enventure Northern using Landfill Tax credits made available by the waste management company Wastewise.
Delivery and management of the project is being undertaken by Steve Maslen & Associates who have formed a joint venture partnership with Oceans Integrated Technologies Ltd reed bed technology experts.
The objective of the project is to provide free and confidential advice to small and medium sized enterprises in the Humber Region. Advice will be available on current and forthcoming legislation and reed bed liquid waste management technologies.
Environmental legislation has increased significantly over the past few years and the Environment Agency, which is the regulating body, is placing increasing pressure on companies to reduce their impact on the environment. This results in spiralling costs for companies forced to comply and those who don't are threatened with prosecutions and hefty fines.
The project offers practical solutions to liquid waste problems in the form of reed bed technology. And it also helps companies with confidential and personal advice on liquid waste management disposal, site visits to working reed beds, technical seminars, and the production and distribution of pertinent and practical technical literature.
Reed Bed technology demonstration:
In addition the consortium are also constructing three innovative and sustainable new reed bed technology demonstration units in the Humber region. The first is situated at North Lincolnshire Council’s Waters’ Edge site, Barton upon Humber which will be accessible to small and medium enterprises during the 18 month life of the project. This will provide companies with the opportunity to see at first hand the remediation of waste water.
Reed bed technology has been researched and successfully demonstrated for many years and has been adopted by a number of companies including ICI and Corus, because of its proven capability to effectively cleanse a wide variety of industrial and organic effluents.
The technology is it low cost, low maintenance and a sustainable solution to effluent problems. Unlike many conventional remediating the single reed bed solution can deal with a cocktail of potentially polluting substances.
Traditionally reed bed applications have tended to be large fixed systems. However to broaden their use an innovative small scale portable system has been developed enabling those industries requiring effluent upgrades or those producing small quantities to treat their liquid wastes. Thus offering a practical and cost-effective solution to companies who need to respond to increasingly stringent environmental legislation.
