Pest control

The council aims to ensure that as far as possible, North Lincolnshire is a public health pest free environment.

It does this by:

  • Providing a public health pest prevention service, at a reasonable cost, to the occupiers of domestic premises within the county boundary
  • Enforcing pest control legislation in the seeking of pest-free conditions
  • Continually assessing safe and humane methods of pest control, to minimise pesticide usage ensuring the public and environment are not put at risk
  • Reducing the level of public health pests to acceptable levels and to develop action plans/policies to fulfil this aim
  • Providing advice on pest prevention, hygiene and proofing to prevent infestations and/or re-infestations.

What we do

  • Control rodents and some insects of public health significance in domestic properties for a reasonable charge
  • Give free advice and information on request on pests in domestic situations, how to control pests and pest prevention
  • Provide free pest identification where ever possible (where the pest is delivered to Church Square House in Scunthorpe)
  • Liase with public/government bodies to prevent/control pests.

Who gets pests?

Every household suffers from pests sooner or later.

Modern, centrally heated homes can offer an especially inviting shelter during the cold winter months; open windows during the summer invite other pests to investigate possible food sources.

Quite often it's the cleanest homes that are most at risk.

Wherever we live, pests can be a year-round problem and are not restricted to rural or urban areas.

From insects to mammals, pests come in all shapes and sizes; some look unpleasant, most however, are harmless.

Fortunately, there are only a few pests that can cause more than a nuisance and these should be dealt with because they can pose a risk to your health.

Many household nuisance pests can be dealt with by using humane traps and pesticides available in the High Street shops. But sometimes it is advisable to call in the experts to solve a persistent problem.

North Lincolnshire Council has a team of officers who eradicate pests of public health significance (tel: 01724 297827).

Pest control - what pests do we treat for?

North Lincolnshire Council may treat for the following pests:

  • Rats
  • Mice
  • Cockroaches
  • Wasps
  • Ants
  • Fleas

Bee numbers have declined over the last five or so years. We refer bees to a local bee keeper or give advice rather than treatment. The British Bee Keepers Association has information on its website about how to identify honey bees, wasps, hornets and bumble bees.

During peak periods (eg. summer) we may not have the resources to treat all service requests. Pests of a public health significance will always take priority over nuisance pests.

We don't treat for:

  • Flies
  • Rabbits
  • Squirrels
  • Moles
  • Pigeons
  • Bed bugs

Is there a charge for the service?

Yes - which may include a call out charge where advice only is given.

What are the charges for treatment?

The current charges for domestic properties are:

Type of call out
Charge

Ants

£42

Wasps

£42
Mice £42
Rats £10.50
Fleas £42
All prices include VAT

The current charges for all pest control in commercial and industrial premises are:

Type of call out
Charge
Contractual £51.50 (including VAT)

CCTV domestic drain surveys - £59.50 per hour or £271 per day

CCTV commercial drain or sewer survey - £87 per hour or £326 per day

Why do I have to pay for pest control treatments - are the costs in my council tax?

There is no statutory obligation for the council to provide a pest prevention and control service. By making a modest charge for pest control the council is able to provide residents of North Lincolnshire with a good quality, competitively priced service.

How quickly can you respond to my problem?

We will respond to emergencies, such as a live rat in a building or inside dwellings, the same day. We will generally respond to all other complaints in one to three working days, although this can be longer in the summer months.

To enquire about appointments and response times please call: (01724) 297827 (Monday to Friday between 8am and 4.30pm).
