Contributing to sustainable development is a key requirement of the North Lincolnshire Local Development Framework (LDF). The Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 requires the council to undertake a Sustainability Appraisal of all its Development Plan Documents (DPDs) and Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs).
Sustainability Appraisal (SA) is a systematic process which appraises the social, economic and environmental effects of the strategies and policies contained in the LDF. It ensures that decisions are made in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. It is an ongoing process which identifies and reports on the likely significant effects of the plan, and the extent to which implementation of the plan will achieve the social, environmental and economic objectives by sustainable development.
In preparing the LDF, the council is required to comply with European Union Directive 2001/42/EC which requires Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of certain plans and programmes. The requirements of the SEA Directive will be incorporated into the Sustainability Appraisal.

The council have already prepared Sustainability Appraisal Reports and other associated documents for the Core Strategy DPD and are now at the early stages of preparing the Sustainability Appraisal for the Housing and Employment Allocations DPD.
