There are a number of other organisations that are involved in the planning process. These have a variety of functions and cover a wide range of planning activities.
Department for Communities & Local Government - Government department responsible for planning system in England. Produces national planning policy in the form of Planning Policy Guidance notes (PPGs)/Planning Policy Statements (PPSs), circulars, ministerial statements and good practice guidance.
Yorkshire & Humber Assembly – The regional planning body. Responsible for preparing the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS).
Government Office for Yorkshire & The Humber – Represents major government departments and the Secretary of State (for example the Deputy Prime Minister) in the Yorkshire and Humber region. The council is required to consult the Secretary of State via the government office about the planning policies they wish to include in their development plans. Responsible for issuing Regional Spatial Strategy on behalf of the Secretary of State.
Royal Town Planning Institute - The professional body responsible for town and country planning in the UK.
Planning Aid - Is a voluntary service offering free, independent and professional advice and support on town planning matters to community groups and individuals who cannot afford to employ a planning consultant. Planning Aid is a vital part of the planning system. It enables local communities, particularly those with limited resources, to participate effectively in planning matters. It also helps town planners to develop their skills and experience.
Planning Portal - Is the first point of call for anyone who wants to find out about the planning system in England and Wales. It is aimed at everyone, from central government and councils to planning professionals and the lay person. Each of the seven sections of the Planning Portal offers information on a different aspect of the planning system. You can also specify a location on the Planning Portal. This allows you to view certain information specifically designed for your area as well as giving you local contacts which you can use to gain further information.
Planning Inspectorate – Government agency which processes planning and enforcement appeals and holds inquiries into local development plans. It also deals with a wide variety of other planning related casework including listed building consent appeals, advertisement appeals, and reporting on planning applications called in for decision by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. In addition we process applications for awards of costs which may arise from any of these.
