Litter

Litter is rubbish that is in the wrong place. It can be small items like sweet wrappers, and cigarette ends or larger items such as bottles and cans.

Littering can be done through carelessness, accident or a purposeful act. Irrelevant of cause litter is unsightly and can harm, people, wildlife and the environment. It is also a breeding ground to disease causing insects and rodents.

How much does it cost to clean up litter?

Councils in England spend an estimated £500 million on clearing up litter every year.

The council picks around 100 bags of litter from North Lincolnshire’s streets a day, 365 days a year. If people stopped dropping litter this money could be spent on other things!

What can be done about litter?

The council has a zero tolerance regards the act of littering and employs wardens who can issue on the spot fines to anyone (over the age of ten) found littering.

There is also an education officer who can support schools, individuals and community groups in anti litter projects, such as the big tidy up, the big tidy up poster competition and the dirty pig campaign.

The council aims to stop people from littering and dispose of their rubbish sensibly.

If you would like to report litter in your area or would like any further information call 01724 297000 or by our Littering Report Form.
