Council owned land and premises

The council has a computerised system of large scale ordnance survey maps. These show the boundaries of all land we own. The system also provides details of all acquisitions and disposals together with leases, lettings, licences easements and rights of way.

Here are some of the frequently asked questions and answers about land and property within North Lincolnshire:

Can you tell me whether the land next to my house, or any other property in North Lincolnshsire is council owned?

Yes, provided the precise location of the land concerned can be accurately described (see below for information we need in order to help you)

What if I want to know who owns private property?

Please contact the Land Registry (telephone: 0207 917 8888) for the relevant enquiry form.

The Land Registry will be unable to help you if it turns out that the land concerned is unregistered. In which case you may wish to make enquiries locally with neighbours. Alternatively, if the land is subject to development proposals, the Head of Planning and Regeneration will be able to provide information on recent planning applications received.

What information do I need to give you before you can tell me whether the council owns a particular property or area of land?

We need to know the boundaries of the land, and if possible the full postal address. The boundaries are often difficult to describe precisely without looking together at a detailed map (which can be arranged for personal visitors). A plan showing the exact boundaries of the land can be submitted by fax or post (see contact details at the bottom of the page). For land or property with a postal address, or which can be described accurately without a detailed plan, enquiries may be submitted on a form. You can down load online via the Property/Land Enquiry document below. Please include your email address if available. If you wish to submit a plan, you can print out the form and post this, along with your plan, to the address on the form.

Is there a charge for this information?

Yes, the council makes a charge of £30 for each enquiry. This offsets the administrative costs in dealing with the enquiry and running our property information service. If you subsequently buy the land you have enquired about from the council, your £30 fee will be deducted from the agreed sale price. You will need to make your payment l before we can process your enquiry. This can be made by cheque (payable to North Lincolnshire Council), and eclosed with your application.

How long will it take you to find out the information I have requested?

Again, this will be dependent upon demand and also upon the need for a detailed plan to be submitted to the council. If the level of enquiries is manageable, and you have provided all necessary details to us, then we can normally provide a telephone response within one working day. In certain cases, depending on the complexity of land ownership in the area, we may need to refer to the council's deeds. In which case the enquiry may take longer.
