Loud noise in the workplace can cause permanent hearing damage. Damage can include loss of hearing or ringing in the ears (tinnitus).
The council's food and safety team deals with noise in the workplace only. For noise nusisance, e.g. noisy neighbours, barking dogs and loud music, please contact the pollution team.

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 - came into force on 6 April 2006 and applied to the music and entertainment sectors from 6 April 2008.
Other problems noise in the workplace can cause:
- May affect concentration
- Interferes with communication
- May cause stress
- Hearing damage may affect your ability to work.
The regulations impose duties on both the employer and employees.
Employers' duties:
- To reduce the risk of hearing damage
- Carry out and record a noise assessment, this must be done by a competent person
- Reduce noise levels as much as possible without using ear protectors
- Inform, instruct and train staff about risks to hearing
- Mark ear protection zones with notices
- Provide ear protectors
- Ensure equipment to reduce noise levels is used and maintained.
Employees' duties:
- Use ear protectors or any other equipment provided to reduce noise levels
- Report any defects.
