Health and safety inspections

The council carries out regular checks on workplaces. The checks ensure safe and healthy work conditions for staff and visiting members of the public.

Officers will not warn businesses when they are going to make an inspection.

The number of visits depends on the risks found during an inspection. The greater the risk, the more often officers will visit.

The council will check:

  • the health, safety and welfare of staff;
  • that the training given to employees is suitable;
  • that the condition of the premises and equipment is safe; and
  • that the business complies with relevant health and safety laws.

Officers usually use informal means to put right any problems. Continual poor conditions or the risk of a person being seriously injured means the council may need to take formal action. This could mean the service of a legal notice or prosecution.
