The council's Food and Safety team is responsible for issuing safety certificates for sports grounds. This certificate ensures the safety of spectators.
Safety certificates
Safety certificates are needed for:
- stadia with a capacity for 10,000 or more spectators;
- all premier and football league stadia; and
- grounds with covered stands with a capacity for 500 or more spectators (regulated stands).
Safety certificates confirm compliance with:
- Safety of Sports Grounds Act 1975; and
- Fire Safety and Safety of Places of Sports Act 1987.
The council has one certified facility - Glanford Park Stadium, Doncaster Road, Gunness, Scunthorpe. This is the home of Scunthorpe United Football Club. The council also has a regulated stand at Quibell Park, Brumby Wood Lane, Scunthorpe.
These facilities are regularly inspected to ensure compliance with the law and public safety.

Completed application forms should be accompanied by:
- risk assessments;
- contingency plans;
- safety policy for spectators;
- name and qualifications of safety officer; and
- eight full sets of detailed drawings.

Costs
Please note that we are entitled to recover costs from you for issuing the safety certificate. Costs will vary depending on the work involved with your application.
