Occupational health

The council's food and safety team provides the following services:

  • regular inspections of workplaces, usually unannounced, to make sure they are safe.
  • investigations of workplace accidents to find out why they happened and how to stop similar accidents occurring.
  • investigates complaints about health, safety or welfare in workplaces
  • provides advice and information about health and safety.

Some workplaces will be the responsibility of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), rather than the council.

This depends on the type of work carried out. Generally, the HSE inspects factories, council buildings, farms and building sites. The council’s food and safety team inspects offices, shops and warehouses.

We can tell you who is responsible for health and safety enforcement when you contact us. It would help us if you have details of the business ready.
