Definitions
- Drain:
- A drain serves a single property.
- Sewer:
- A sewer serves more than one property.
- Private sewer:
- Serves more than one property and is the responsibility of the properties
draining into it, including the clearance of blockages and repair of any defects.
Most post-war properties are served by private sewers.
- Public sewer:
- These are the responsibility of the water undertaker - which in the case
of North Lincolnshire will be either Severn Trent or Anglian Water. Some pre-war
properties are served by public sewers.

What we do
- Use CCTV equipment to determine faults with systems
- Investigate recurring drainage problems
- Identify layout of drainage systems using dye-testing or Sonde probing
- Where necessary take enforcement action in order to resolve drainage problems
- Offer free advice on drainage problems.
More information on who is responsible for repairs to private sewers can be
found in the leaflet attached below. The leaflet also has information on items
or substances that shouldn't be disposed of down a drain or sewer in case it
leads to a blockage.
