Private sewer:
Serves more than one property and is the responsibility of the properties draining into it, including the clearance of blockages and repair of any defects. Most post-war properties are served by private sewers.

What we do

  • Use CCTV equipment to determine faults with systems
  • Investigate recurring drainage problems
  • Identify layout of drainage systems using dye-testing or Sonde probing
  • Where necessary take enforcement action in order to resolve drainage problems
  • Offer free advice on drainage problems.

More information on who is responsible for repairs to private sewers can be found in the leaflet attached below. The leaflet also has information on items or substances that shouldn't be disposed of down a drain or sewer in case it leads to a blockage.
