Wildlife surveillance network

The high-tech wildlife surveillance network at Waters’ Edge is the first of its kind in the UK.

The project was funded using landfill tax credits through the Biffaward Scheme.

Waters' Edge Visitor Centre will act as communication and transmission hub for the regions wide "Wildlife Surveillance Network".

The camera network uses state of the art discreet and high-powered video cameras. These beam live pictures of animals and birds at the site to displays in the visitor centre. People will also be able to view these live pictures through the Waters’ Edge website. The wildlife surveillance network will also help interpret displays at the centre.

Installation of the cameras

The first camera was installed Thursday 9 December 2006 on the Humber Bridge.

A wireless network links the Visitor Centre at Waters' Edge to a pan, tilt and zoom (PTZ) camera on the eastern tower (south side) of the Humber Bridge. This camera will give the visitor an overview of the park. From the visitor centre you will be able to control the movement and zoom of the camera to focus in on different areas of the park, and other areas of interest such as reads island.

In addition to the two further PTZ cameras, 20 smaller cameras were installed in bird boxes and across the Country Park. These cameras are able to show a picture in pitch black, so will be able to show nesting birds in there homes.

These beam live images on the internet and in the visitors' centre.

Eco-watch, the company who installed the wildlife surveillance network and interactive displays at the centre, has designed special wildlife camera packages for homeowners, schools and colleges. These will enable everyone to take part and upload images of their own wildlife to the community web site - everyone can share. Eco-watch continues to work closely with North Lincolnshire council to ensure its wildlife surveillance network is rolled out across the region.
