Clean Air Act approvals

Before installing a furnace (except a domestic furnace) in a building or fixed boiler, you must inform the council. The furnace must be capable of operating continuously without emitting smoke when burning fuel. The fuel used must be the type the furnace was designed for.

There is no set definition of 'furnace'. But a practical interpretation is:

'Any enclosed or partly enclosed space in which liquid, solid or gaseous matter is burned, on in which heat is produced.'

Domestic furnaces are defined as those with a maximum heating capacity of less than 16.12 kilowatts.

Note: You should contact the council’s Development Control Section to find out if you need planning permission to erect a chimney.
