Air quality
Good air quality is essential for our health, quality of life and the environment. Pollution may have harmful effects, particularly for people with existing respiratory problems.
Air quality strategy
Councils have to assess air quality in their area against government air quality objectives. In some cases, levels of pollutants exceed the Government’s objectives and are likely to continue to do so. Councils have to decide how they will deal with air quality management. They also have to decide what measures they will take to improve air quality.
Review and assessment
North Lincolnshire Council has to carry out a review and assessment of air quality within its boundaries. This forms part of the national air quality strategy. The council must take all potential sources of pollution into consideration. These sources are mainly industry and traffic related. It looks at all seven major pollutants. These include:
- PM10 (fine particles of dust)
- Nitrogen Dioxide (NOx)
- Sulphur Dioxide (SO2)
- Carbon Monoxide
- Benzene.
The concentrations of these pollutants in the air are compared to air quality objectives. These are based on current medical evidence for the health effects of each pollutant.
