The Big Tidy Up

North Lincolnshire Council supports the Big Tidy Up, one of Keep Britain Tidy's campaigns.

Taking part in the Big Tidy Up is your chance to make a difference to your area and help rid our streets of rubbish.

The council already cleans up over 100 bags of litter every day of the year. However, it needs more people to help put a stop to littering behaviour through activities like the big tidy up.

To help start making a difference, sign up to the Big Tidy Up by visiting the Big Tidy Up website.

When you have registered you will be sent a kit that will include a supply of rubbish sacks, vests, and posters to promote your tidy up.

The council will:

  • Help, advise and support through our website, the helpline on 01724 297000 or via email customerservice@northlincs.gov.uk
  • By prior request arrange collection of and disposal of litter collected.
  • By prior contact give away black bags, litter pickers, hi-viz vests, protective wear and equipment.
  • Encourage volunteers and community involvement in North Lincolnshire to sign up to the Big Tidy Up.

The council can also provide support by educating others about the problems of litter. For more information follow the link to litter education.

Preparation

Planning ahead is important to the success of your event. By following these tips your tidy up should be very rewarding and great fun:

  • Decide where you would like to do your tidying up - this could be anything from a local landmark to a well known 'grot spot'
  • Make sure you get permission from the landowner, such as the council, before you start you event
  • Plan what you will do with the waste once it is collected. The council will help by collecting the rubbish by prior appointment on 01724 297000 or by emailing customerservice@northlincs.gov.uk
  • If you remove the rubbish yourself you should ensure that your local household-recycling centre is able to take it.
  • Encourage volunteers to separate and recycle rubbish where possible.
  • Make it as much fun as possible by getting people involved
  • Inform and instruct volunteers of any health and safety risks.
  • Take before and after photos and pictures of your group at work, and send them to the council at publications.admin@northlincs.gov.uk
  • Keep a note of the amount of rubbish collected by counting the number of bags.

Sponsorship

Organising a successful tidy up can normally be done with very little financial outlay. But if you are planning a large-scale event you may want to try and get sponsorship for the work you do.

  • Local companies may be interested in supporting your tidy up by donating money or equipment for your event
  • Or money could be raised through fundraising events such as car boot sales, summer fairs, a car wash etc
  • If you would like to help raise money for Keep Britain Tidy, why not turn your tidy up into a sponsored event. Your volunteers could be sponsored to fill a certain number of bags, or tidy a certain sized area.

Getting sponsors for your tidy up will add to the challenge and excitement of your event.
