The council has a responsibility to deal with dangerous buildings as they occur. Buildings can become dangerous due to:
- Old age
- Deterioration
- Settlement.
Or by more dramatic causes such as:
- Storm
- Explosion
- Fire
- Impact by vehicles.
All buildings that appear to be dangerous should be reported to the council. The matter will be treated with the utmost urgency.
Immediately dangerous buildings
If a building is considered immediately dangerous the council can request urgent evacuation. It can also take any action necessary to protect the public and adjacent property. Such action may involve:
- Temporary road closure
- Barricading
- Shoring
- Scaffolding
- Repairs
- Demolition.
Buildings that are not immediately dangerous
Where the building is not immediately dangerous the owner will receive a notice to make property safe. The council will give the owner a set amount of time to arrange for the work to be done. If the work is not completed within the set time the council can arrange all work necessary to make the building safe. It will then recover expenses from the owner.
The council has legal powers to respond to structures that are:
- Dangerous
- Dilapidated
- Neglected.
The Building Control service operates a 24-hour call out service. It also responds to requests from:
- The emergency services
- North Lincolnshire CCTV Centre.
