11. Special educational needs

The North Lincolnshire policy on Inclusion and the SEN Code of Practice 2001 require the LA to make suitable provision for children with special educational needs in their local mainstream school wherever possible.

In addition the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act 2001 prohibits all schools from discriminating against disabled children without lawful justification in their admission arrangements. All schools are expected to make 'reasonable adjustments' for disabled pupils and prospective pupils via their accessibility strategy.

The SEN Team at Hewson House (tel 01724 297148) has information available on the assessment procedure and provision made by the authority on request. Copies of the information are supplied to parents whose children are referred after receiving a formal request for a statutory assessment in line with the 1996 Education Act. Parents are encouraged to discuss their children's needs with the SEN Team.

If your child has a statement of special educational need and is due to move from one stage of education to another i.e. pre-school/nursery to infant school, from infant school to junior school, from primary school to secondary school; the Annual Review meeting should be held in the Autumn Term prior to transfer to ensure planning and preparations are in place for a smooth transition. In many cases we encourage earlier consultation with the receiving school in the year prior to the transition year in order to provide seamless transition.

If your child has a statement of SEN then you may request a special school placement. The school your child currently attends may do the same. Should the authority receive such a request then consultation with the appropriate North Lincolnshire
