A Children from Low Income Households

The Education and Inspections Act 2006 extends the entitlement to free transport of children from low income households. The Act makes the following provision:

Children who are entitled to free school meals, or whose parents are in receipt of their maximum level of working tax credit, may receive transport support in addition to that described in sections B - F

(i) Primary Age Children

Children aged 8 - 11 are entitled to free transport if they live more than 2 miles from their nearest qualifying school.

(ii) Secondary Age Children

Children aged 11 - 16 are entitled to free transport to one of their 3 nearest qualifying schools where they live more than 2 but less than 6 miles from that school.

Parents who have expressed a preference for a school based on their religion or belief will receive free transport to their nearest suitable school preferred on those grounds where they live more than 2, but not more that 15 miles from the school.

A qualifying school is a community, foundation or voluntary school, community or foundation special school, non-maintained special school, pupil referral unit, maintained nursery or an academy.

For a child with special educational needs an independent school will be a suitable school if it is the only school named in the child's statement or it is the nearest of 2 or more schools named in the statement.

The provisions of the Act will be incorporated within the council's Home to School Transport Policies. The revised policy provides more details about the way in which they will be applied in North Lincolnshire, including the review and withdrawal of free transport for pupils who are no longer entitled to receive it.
