Transforming secondary schools in North Lincolnshire - first round of consultation ended 3 March 2006
North Lincolnshire Council is working on exciting plans to attract £62m (now £80m) of investment to transform secondary schools in Scunthorpe.
This is part of the Building Schools for the Future project (BSF). The investment comes from the Government - not local council taxpayers. The money will be used to rebuild or refurbish schools.
There will also be state-of the-art IT facilities. It will be the biggest single investment in school buildings in living memory. And it represents the opportunity of a lifetime.
Schools included in the project are:
These schools already do a good job. They have the management, teachers and support staff to provide an excellent education. However, the buildings and facilities these staff and pupils have to work in are not always of a standard expected in the 21st century.
The Building Schools for the Future project will give pupils all the facilities they need to achieve their best.
This is a longer-term project. The improvements should be in place in around four to five years' time. Apart from the better buildings, what will the new look to education offer?
- Courses that let students learn in the way that suits them best, at their own pace
- Access to a much wider range of courses
- Fewer compulsory subjects and a wider choice of what interests students
- Possibility of learning in more than one place
- Superb IT facilities
- Longer school opening hours and better community facilities
- More support for healthy lifestyles
The council has been asking for the views of local people. Whether they are a parent of a pupil at one of these schools, a parent whose child will attend these schools in future years, or a member of the community with an interest in education, we wanted to know how they would like to see schools transformed. Crucially the council has also spoken to pupils themselves to see what their views are. This will continue. We have also consulted with staff and governors at every school.
This round of consultation has now closed.
